In today鈥檚 media and news, I feel like I hear more stories about the benefits of sharing emotions and discussing mental health than I ever did growing up. This is a wonderful thing and through popular media including television and movie portrayals and celebrity confessions, we are growing more accustomed to talking about historically taboo or just unknown topics surrounding emotions and mental health.

With great strides being made in these conversations, it seems important to discuss emotional intensity among our country鈥檚 brightest, and sometimes most vulnerable, youth.

The 听has a great explanation for why gifted youth tend to experience more intense emotions, saying, 鈥淚ntellectual complexity goes hand in hand with emotional depth. Just as gifted children’s thinking is more complex and has more depth than other children’s, so too are their emotions more complex and more intense.鈥

Gifted youth are often more aware of and affected by their surroundings. Children who feel things with great intensity experience the world in a different way than their non-gifted peers. Emotional or physical reactions to events can last longer for gifted children. These experiences of heightened stimulation observed in many gifted individuals are referred to as intensities or听Overexcitabilities. Polish psychologist identified five overexcitabilities and their associated behaviors:

  1. Psychomotor: Characterized primarily by high levels of energy
  2. Sensual: Characterized by a heightened awareness of all five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing
  3. Emotional: Characterized by extreme emotional sensitivity
  4. Intellectual: Characterized by deep curiosity and thought
  5. Imaginational: Characterized by vivid imagination and visualization

The first step in managing intense emotions is identifying and understanding them. If you think your child exhibits overexcitabilities, talk to your child about how they feel and react to certain situations. Healthy discussions around expressing emotions make everyone feel safer and more understood. Starting these discussions at a young age enforces good habits for the future.

How exactly do these overexcitabilities manifest themselves? It varies from child to child, but there are common associated with all five overexcitabilities.

  • Psychomotor responses can include pacing, rapid talk or use of hand gestures
  • Sensual responses can include sensitivities to clothing textures, food tastes or a need for physical displays of affection like cuddles or hugs
  • Emotional responses can include intense feelings of empathy or compassion, depression, anxiety or loneliness
  • Imaginational responses can include visualizations, use of metaphorical speech, dreaming or magical thinking
  • Intellectual responses can include constant curiosity, deep thinking or a propensity towards solving puzzles and problems

Understanding what emotional intensities are and the behaviors associated with them can help with misdiagnosis or just plain misunderstanding. While some of the more extreme behaviors associated with overexcitabilities can be worrisome for a parent or educator, such as a child鈥檚 depression or anxiety, there can also be a wonderful bright side to overexcitabilities.

Some of the benefits of overexcitabilities can include:

  • Empathy and compassion towards others
  • A desire to solve major world problems
  • Creativity
  • A high sense of self-awareness
  • Enthusiasm
  • High energy

Intense emotions don鈥檛 always need to be feared or regulated. They are what make so many gifted children wonderfully unique. However, for the times that overintesities do need to be managed, here are some strategies:

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Outdoor physical activities such as going on walks, hikes or playing at a park
  • Quiet reflection time
  • Journaling or drawing
  • Encourage discussions about how your child feels and why they feel the way they do

I hope this blog post helps with identifying and managing intense emotions in a gifted child. 优蜜视频鈥檚 also hosts a list of books, articles, programs and professionals that can be used as additional sources of information about overexcitabilities.

The Process of Invention /blog-the-process-of-invention/ /blog-the-process-of-invention/#respond Tue, 14 May 2019 23:35:53 +0000 https://ieadev.wpengine.com/blog-the-process-of-invention/ By Alexis Hopper, 优蜜视频 Program Coordinator

To celebrate National Inventors Month, Alexis Hopper put together a blog post highlighting 优蜜视频 Student Inventions through The Process of Inventing.

鈥淎n invention has to make sense in the world it finishes in, not in the world it started.鈥 鈥擳ime O鈥橰eilly

In 1998, the Academy of Applied Science, United Inventors Association of America, and Inventors鈥 Digest magazine came together to bring us National Inventors Month. 鈥淲e want to recognize those talented, brave individuals who dare to be blatantly creative, and therefore different, and whose accomplishments affect every facet of our lives,鈥 said the editor of Inventors鈥 Digest, Joanne Hayes-Rines.

Whether advancing the fields of science, technology, arts, or humanities, human ingenuity is fueled by the spark of genius, as well as these other key drivers. Check out examples of our own student inventors鈥 projects and how they each illustrate a different aspect of the inventing process.

This month, the Institute for Educational Advancement (优蜜视频) kicks off our 20th year of supporting the hearts and minds of gifted youth. Since 1998, we have been dedicated to meeting the unique needs of gifted children so that they can reach their full intellectual and personal potential.

As we reflect on our history, our milestones, our current impact and our vision for the future, we invite our community to join us in identifying what makes 优蜜视频 special. Can you add to the list below to help us get to 20 and celebrate our ?

  1. Community.听Central to our initiatives here at 优蜜视频 is building a community of learners, teachers and mentors. This 鈥渃ommunity鈥 happens organically with the ongoing connections between of the families we serve, but also through the we organize to bring new perspectives and voices together.
  2. Balance.听As expressed in our logo of the Golden Ratio, at 优蜜视频 we aim to help gifted youth achieve balance in their intellectual and personal lives. We understand that personal growth is multi-faceted, and involves not just the intellect but also emotional well-being, personal values and social connections.
  3. Fueling Curiosity. Gifted children need deeper exploration and enrichment than what is generally offered in a traditional school setting. We listen to our community, responding to their needs by offering deeply robust and advanced learning opportunities for all ages of gifted learners. Most recently, we launched our in response to an identified need expressed by our families for rich, STEM-based opportunities for middle and high schoolers.
  4. Partnerships.听优蜜视频 first officially partnered with Pasadena Unified School District in 2000 to offer our Pipeline to Success program, an effort which successfully supported underserved gifted students in the district. Today, we continue to partner with local schools, school districts and education organizations so that through our combined efforts, the unique learning needs of the gifted population are met.
  5. Parent and Teacher Support. Finding the right resources and support for a gifted child can be overwhelming, frustrating and time-intensive. Since our inception, 优蜜视频 has helped to ease this process for parents and teachers by providing in-person and online (see our ) guidance, counseling and support to help these caring adults find the optimal educational environment for a child.
  6. All听Students. 优蜜视频 is committed to helping all gifted children, regardless of background. This is why as a nonprofit we to be able to provide our heavily subsidized program offerings. And for those who are not able to pay tuition, we offer financial aid and scholarships. We are dedicated to not turning away any qualified student from participating in our programs. While it varies by individual program, approximately 1 in 4 students served by 优蜜视频 receives financial aid.
  7. Advocacy.听While 优蜜视频 and our partners have made progress in advocating for the rights of gifted learners to receive needed support and resources, we still have a ways to go. In a national poll conducted through our we have uncovered that the general public believes in supporting our gifted learners financially. With our many education and advocacy partners, we are working to ensure that gifted youth have access to the resources they need to thrive.
  8. People.听Each time we talk to a parent, teach a student, train a teacher or provide counseling, our 优蜜视频 staff, teachers, counselors and Fellows are deeply committed to providing the highest quality services possible.
