Course Description:
This course is for students who desire to express themselves effectively and confidently in any situation, socially or academically. Throughout the course, students will develop and improve their critical-thinking, public speaking, and argumentative skills through participation in speeches and debates. They will explore and research a variety of formats, including educational and persuasive speeches, Lincoln-Douglas debate, cross-examination, and academic debate. In addition, students will develop their ability to critique, analyze, and question speeches and debates delivered by others. They will apply this knowledge to develop and present an independent speech and participate in group debates. Topic matter for speeches and debates throughout the course will be selected by students.

This course will take the mystery out of learning to write well by breaking down the process into manageable steps. Using a program called the Hochman Method from The Writing Revolution, students will learn writing strategies that will equip them to face any blank page with confidence. Sessions will focus on specific techniques and targeted feedback that match each student鈥檚 needs. At the same time, students will have opportunities to pursue content based on their particular interests, with the objective to develop enjoyment and motivation in the writing process, in addition to skill and technique.

In this course students will learn introductory drawing concepts such as perspective, rendering, observational drawing and illustration techniques to gain a basic understanding of visual arts. Students will learn design principles and the art history context in which they were developed. These fundamental drawing principles will be explored each week as students fill up a sketchbook with their drawings. Each principle will have an introductory phase and experimental phase where students will be able to practice with more open ended assignments. The knowledge gained in this course will give students a baseline to continue learning in fine art, illustration, graphic design, industrial design or animation!
