Course Description
The greatest feats of architecture and mechanics stem from simple mechanisms that this course aims to explore. Using commonplace materials in the comfort of their own homes, students will explore the machines that are responsible for the creation of the many wonders of the world and that still define our lives today. The axle, inclined plane, lever, wedge, screw, pulley, and more defy their simplicity in how integral they are to human achievement. As they dictate direction or magnitude of forces to optimize the work they do, our aspiring engineers will come to appreciate the role of these fundamental machines in the broader complex, modern world.

Course Description
Whether you have aspirations of being a professional litigator, or you simply want to be a more persuasive and confident conversationalist, learning to carefully examine, analyze, and articulate your own ideas, as well as the ideas of others can be an invaluable skill. Throughout the course, students will develop and improve their critical thinking, public speaking, and argumentative skills. Furthermore, students will learn to critique, analyze, and interrogate arguments posited by others. Students will apply this knowledge through participating in appropriately-moderated and structured group debates, all centered around topics they decide on and feel most passionate about.
NOTE: All classes are held in Pacific Time.
Course Description
There’s no need for a lab when you can bring the wonders of chemistry to life in your own home! Common household materials hold secrets of chemistry that students will uncover each week with unique and safe experiments. Under the guidance of the instructor, and with the help of an adult at home, as needed, students will learn about topics that are foundational to an in-depth knowledge of chemistry. Knowledge of acids and bases, chemical reactions, and osmosis are just a few of the topics covered in this interactive exploration of a field of science too often seen as inaccessible.

News headlines are designed to evoke strong emotional responses, but in this instructor-guided seminar, students will practice critical media literacy skills to uncover the facts and nuance behind the clickbait. Using the current event topics of their choice, students will dig into the research, discuss their findings, fact-check their resources, identify context, and participate in respectful dialogues in order to make sense of the news media they are consuming and to develop an appreciation for and understanding of others’ perspectives.
